Summer is upon us here in Ketchum, and the abbreviated, fleeting daytime of winter has given way to an abundance of sunshine, reaching deep into the clock and gifting the town’s people with extended social hours.
Happy hour and beyond no longer lurks dark spaces; it basks in the gentle, liberating radiation of the evening sun for hours on end, amidst the decks and patios of local establishments once buried in feet of snow. So, once you arrive in town, slip into your flip-flops, grab a cold one, pull up a seat, and lounge in the mellow vibes. You won’t have trouble finding a proper venue—Ketchum boasts an abundance of outdoor locales just waiting for you and your crowd to put your feet up and tip a few back. Here’s some of the best patios in Sun Valley. Perfect for the aspiring deck-dweller.
Established way back in the day (1978, to be exact), Grumpy’s has been a longtime staple of the Ketchum bar and grub scene, and rightfully so. A true “hole in the wall”, the bar and grill hosts a colorful mix of locals and regular out-of-towners, and is a venue not to be neglected if you’re looking for an outstanding, gut-filling burger with a generous side of beer.
Summertime patrons cruise out of the cozy confines of the locally authentic building with a 32 ounce schooner of tap beer in hand and grab a seat amongst the boisterous paver-patio crowd. The taps typically start to flow early here, so if you’re looking to begin happy hour before the clock officially says so, this is your spot. Grumpy’s is located just down Warm Springs Road, and is a quick walk from anywhere in town.
As the sun begins it’s inevitable descent behind the mountains, you may want to gain a bit of elevation to reset the clock. Walk right back up the hill on warm springs road from Grumpy’s and grab a seat on the deck at Lefty’s Bar a Grill. Another seasoned local hangout, Lefty’s wooden deck is always bustling with people sharing stories from a great day of play in the valley.
The scene comes alive with live music from local musicians once or twice a week in the evenings, and the extensive tap beer and applaudable wine selection will help anyone tap their sandal to the beat. The burgers are great, the salads are fresh, and the rightfully famous “Monkey” fries are a great vehicle for fry sauce and ketchup.
The Warfield Distillery and Brewery
Once the sun finally gives way to starshine, head right into the heart of Ketchum and warm your toes by the gorgeous fire on the rooftop patio of The Warfield.
A welcome newcomer to the Ketchum drinking and dining scene, the restaurant boasts an exceptionally creative, slightly up-scale food menu that will help you shake things up a bit. The patio is, without a doubt, one of the coolest spots in town, and the cocktails are outstanding. The establishment distills its own gin and vodka, and has whiskey and apple brandy in the works. Their self-brewed beer is making waves in the valley, and should not be missed upon your visit.
River Run Lodge
The ski-season bustle of River Run Lodge, at the base of Sun Valley Ski Resort on Bald Mountain, has fallen dormant in the summer months for far too long. This June marks the Lodge’s first summer opening, and it’s about time! The paver patio sits right along the spectacular Big Wood River, and the thrilling mountain bike trails on the mountain will lead the adventurous straight downhill to the beer taps. It’s a perfect spot for a cold one, among the fresh mountain air and greenery.
