Sun Valley has a strong reputation for its fabulous downhill skiing, but its less adrenaline-filled partner, Nordic skiing, is a favorite pastime of Sun Valley residents and visitors alike. Lucky for all of us, Sun Valley has world-class Nordic trails, and it’s taken just as seriously as skiing on Baldy.

Sun Valley

There are over 40 kilometers of trails located in Sun Valley itself. These trails are groomed daily and maintained for both classic and skate skiing. Check out the conditions of the trails by looking at the Nordic Report. These trails range from easy to difficult and will keep any skier busy for days. The best part about Nordic skiing in Sun Valley is that you can rent your whole Nordic gear package at the Sun Valley Nordic Skiing & Snowshoe Center, walk right out the front door, and get on your skis. For more information about Nordic skiing in Sun Valley, check out their website.

Blaine County

The 40 kilometers of trails in Sun Valley are not the only places to Nordic ski in the Wood River Valley. The Blaine County Recreation District has over 160 kilometers of trail that range from Bellevue at the far southern end of the Wood River Valley all the way to Galena Lodge at the northern end of the valley. The BCRD has a grooming report that is regularly updated and can give you an idea of where the best trails of the day might be! Check out the BCRD trails here.

Galena Lodge

Galena Lodge lays claims to some of the best Nordic skiing in the nation. The trail system is at the base of the Boulder mountains, which makes for some fabulous scenery while you’re out and about. A large chunk of the Harriman Trail also runs through the Sawtooth National Recreation Area up to Galena Lodge and is great for first-timers who are getting comfortable on their skis. If you’re an experienced skier, there are some trails with challenging grades for you too! Like Sun Valley, you can rent all your gear at Galena Lodge.

Nordic skiing is fun for the whole family. The falls will no doubt incur laughter, and the challenges will leave everyone ready for a solid sleep at the end of the day. Sun Valley has a rich legacy of Nordic skiing that is still being celebrated today, so get yourself a Nordic setup and join in the fun!
