Words don’t do justice to the beauty around Aspen. The Elk Mountain Range is loaded with life-list trails, views, passes and peaks. You’ve got to see them for yourself. Hikers can find every level of trail, but this list if for the adventurous. Here are the 5 best Aspen adventure hikes.

Cathedral Lake Adventure Hike 5. Cathedral Lake

  • Distance: 6.4 miles roundtrip
  • Rating: difficult
  • Elevation: 9,880 feet to 11,866 feet

The gorgeous high-alpine lake in the shadow of Cathedral Peak is worth the steep switchbacks to reach it. Bring a fly rod or dip your toes. You’re above tree line, so go early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. For spectacular bonus scenery, go 2 miles more to crest Electric Pass (13,500 feet), Colorado’s highest trail pass.

4. Midway Pass

  • Distance: 6.4 miles roundtrip
  • Rating: moderate to difficult
  • Elevation: 10,507 feet to 12,120 feet

Follow the fork less traveled to reach high alpine meadows and 360-degree views toward Independence Pass, the Collegiate Peaks and the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness. If you’re experienced at route-finding or want an overnight, continue 5.4 miles farther to connect with the Hunter Creek Trail and hike all the way back to Aspen (about 17 miles total).

Castle Peak Adventure Hike3. Castle Peak

  • Distance: 13.5 miles roundtrip
  • Rating: difficult
  • Elevation: 11,100 feet to 14,265 feet

Colorado’s 12th highest peak is an excellent intro to Elk Mountain 14ers. The air is thinner, but the panoramas are glorious. Class 2 status means you don’t need ropes. Go early to avoid storms. Carry plenty of water to help avoid altitude sickness and follow all mountaineering safety guidelines.

2. Conundrum Hot Springs

  • Distance: 17 miles roundtrip
  • Rating: moderate to difficult
  • Elevation: 8,700 feet to 11,200 feet

Talk about alpine paradise—natural hot spring pools with gorgeous views down-valley and at ringing peaks. Unless you’re a trail runner or speed hiker, plan to spend a night—more time for soaking anyway. Designated campsites are limited and fill up fast. Clothing is optional.

  • Distance: 11 miles one way
  • Rating: difficult
  • Elevation: 9,580 feet to 12,500 feet

Connect two classic, amazing ski towns in style. The Limelight will set you up with all you need, including lodging at Crested Butte’s Nordic Inn. Hike back or ride back by vehicle or helicopter. Savor the views below the Maroon Bells and from 12,500-foot West Maroon Pass.
