There’s nothing better than fireworks on the 4th of July—except for fireworks over Aspen Mountain on the 4th of July! It’s a spectacular site. It has been a few years since the show has gone off due to fire bans, but it’s looking good so far for 2014. There’s really no bad seat in town, but here’s where to go to get the best view of Aspen’s Fireworks Extravaganza.
Red Mountain: Watch the show across the valley and overlooking downtown. Head up Red Mountain Road to Hunter Creek Road to reach the parking lot and trailhead for the Hunter Creek Trail.
Smuggler Mountain: Follow the popular 1.5-mile hiking trail (actually a 4-wheel drive road) up to Smuggler’s observation deck. Carry a blanket or camp/lawn chairs to stylize your view over downtown Aspen.
Smuggler Mountain Trailhead: If you don’t feel like walking, set up your chairs in the park at the trailhead. We won’t judge. And you’ll still savor a sweet view.
Elks Building: You’ve got to know someone to score rooftop space on top of this Aspen landmark. Same goes for any rooftop in town, but you never know who you might run into…
Limelight Rooftop Terraces: You’ve got to know someone—wait a sec, you do! Kick back on overstuffed lounge chairs and wraparound sofas. Order up a food and drink package. Feel like you could touch all those glittering sparkles overhead. Perfect—it’s great to be an American in Aspen!
